Special Effects cover everything from making it seem like it's raining when it's not, all the way to FX Make-Up which makes people look dead who are actually alive. Or Alive when they are actually dead. |

| Q | How do I get Squibs to make someone look like they've been shot in my film? | ||||
| A | Well, since Squibs are an explosive charge, and since setting off explosives without a permit is illegal and incredibly dangerous, it's going to be pretty tough. There are places that can legally, and safely use Squibs and other explosives, but it does require permits and can be expensive. There are other ways to simulate a bullet hit on film: | ||||
| Method | Description | Pros | Cons | ||
| Squibs | Explosive Device attached to the actor and detonated remotely to simulate the hit. | Looks best on film. It's what we have come to expect a bullet hit to look like | Expensive, dangerous, requires permits. | ||
| Computer Generated | Adding a bullet hit in post production using computer software. | Safest for all involved, can make as many or as few hits as needed. | Generally doesn't look as good. | ||
| Compressed Air | An air compressor loaded with blood is wired to the actor and air is used in place of an explosive to simulate the hit. | Safe, inexpensive. | Complicated to do, doesn't always work, hit or miss as far as how good it will look. | ||
| Paintballs | Hollow paintballs loaded with fake blood shot at the actor from off screen. | Looks great, fast set up. | Can be dangerous, requires the shooter to be accurate. | ||
As you can see, there are many ways to make someone look like they've been shot, and there are probably many more than this. A lot of times, the best, safest and easiest way to do it is to just not show it at all. Watch some movies that have shoot outs, not every bullet impact is shown. Many times all you see is the actor falling out of frame, or clutching his chest, or some other camera trick is used to make you think the actor has been shot without actually showing it. Also, keep in mind that you can also tweak any of these techniques with the computer in post to make it look more realistic. |
