Q Do I really need a Make-Up Artist?
A

Yes. If you watch low budget films, you'll notice that a lot of the actors have a glare off their heads, and, of course, don't look as "neat and clean" as Hollywood actors do. It's not a matter of skin conditions or anything else, it's that the low budget actors are not wearing any make-up, or are not wearing the right make-up.

Don't get the Make-Up Artist confused with the Special Effects Make-Up Artist. While sometimes they are one in the same, many times they are not. The Make-Up Artist is in charge of making the actors and actresses look "Natural". They are trying to make them look like they would in every day life, as seen through the camera, while the FX Make-Up Artist makes people look different than they really do. That can mean making them look older, younger, injured, or completely alien.

And don't forget about the hair stylist. Again, many times the FX Artist, Make-Up Artist and Hair Stylist are all the same person, if so, you're triply blessed. A Hair Stylist on set will help make the actors look even more natural, and make sure that their hair styles and lengths match previously shot scenes.
